We wish to start the New Year with a HUGE thank you to the Westfield High School community for their support at the holiday band concerts. For this year’s concerts, we asked that each family coming to the concerts bring a toy as a “price of admission” to donate to the local charity, Our Neighbors Child. The charity sent two boxes in hopes they would be filled. We not only filled those two boxes, but seven , 55 gallon drum bags as well! They were overwhelmed and thanks to you, the community, hundreds of children in our area had a wonderful holiday instead of going without.

After the school holiday break, the band students participated in the district band try-outs. Over 500 regional students try out for the two bands, each with about 40 to 60 players each. Westfield had its largest placement yet with 24 students making the “cut”. To put it in perspective, only a very few of the regional high schools come close to that amount of students being selected with most only garnering 8 or less!

The bands also had a great opportunity on January 7 for an evening field trip to the Kennedy Center to see the National Symphony Orchestra. This event was especially meaningful as the NSO performed one of the pieces that the WHS Wind Symphony will perform at this year’s District Festival.

Finally, the bands winter season will end with the Wind Symphony performing with the University of Virginia’s prestigious Wind Ensemble on February 28th. This was an invitation only performance and again, something that not all regional high schools get invited to do.
