Hello Westfield Band Families –
Monday starts Band Camp Week 3! This means practice is 2-7 pm for most of the band; color guard and percussion will be coming in early some days (your kids should know the schedule). The Spirit Wear Store closes at midnight on Monday August 14. Check out the band merchandise at https://bsnteamsports.com/shop/ZAN6zZRDYB. If you are going to attend the Marching Band Pool Party 1-4 pm on Saturday, please register on the Google form at https://forms.gle/arXcDDTqXFamhCvS9 and drop your payment (if needed) in the black lock box outside Mr. Johnson’s office by the end of practice on Tuesday. If your family does not belong to the Virginia Run HOA, you must buy a pool pass and register on the Google form on time, or you will not be able to attend! The Band Boosters will supply pizza and drinks for those who register. Uniforms Students should have brought both their concert and their marching uniforms home at this point. However, there are still a number on the rack in the hallway outside the band room. Please remind your student to pick their uniforms on Monday if they did not bring them home already. Please unzip the garment bag with the marching uniform. They need to air out to keep funky things from growing on them! Care instructions are attached to this email and available online at https://www.westfieldband.org/uploads/7/8/3/0/7830918/marching_band_uniform_care_and_information.pdf. Bulldog BBQ Thursday, August 17, is the Bulldog BBQ (4-8 pm) – and the first chance of the season to see the band perform. Please students should report at 2pm as usual. Wear the black W band shirt. The band is scheduled to perform at 5:45 and students will be dismissed afterward (we estimate they’ll be done about 6:30, at which point they can be picked up or enjoy the BBQ). Section leaders will take 9th graders on a tour of all their classes and walk them around the school. Class B Jackets Class B jackets will be distributed to new marchers and returning marchers who ordered one on Friday. It’s not too late to purchase a new Class B for $40. Email [email protected] if interested. Volunteers Needed Just because band camp is winding down doesn’t mean the need for volunteers is. In fact, it’s just the opposite! We will need volunteers for competitions, home games, the homecoming parade, holding the med bag during practices, and fund raisers including the Mattress Sale on August 26. Keep an eye on the Charms calendar on the band web page (www.westfieldband.org). Please note, Charms does not always work well with Safari browsers. If you are prompted for a login code, it is MarchingBulldogs. We also will be soliciting for donations to the 3rd quarter concessions for home football games. Registration Forms We are still missing registration paperwork for some marchers! Please turn it ASAP – you can drop it in the beige box in the band room. If you need the forms, download them from Registration2023 - Westfield High School Band (westfieldband.org). First Week of School The practice schedule (barring holidays/special events) starting August 21 is:

THE SPIRIT WEAR STORE OPEN! It is only open for 2 weeks so place your order now!. Store closes on Monday, August 14 at midnight. Log onto the store and see whats available - https://bsnteamsports.com/shop/ZAN6zZRDYB This is your chance to purchase your band merch for the year. We only open the store once a year, so please get your orders in if you are interested. This is a great opportunity to get some early Christmas Shopping done! Parents - Please purchase a polo if you may volunteer during the year. This is our parent uniform for chaperones and pit crew and throughout the year. With that exception all merchandise is optional. Don't forget some cold weather gear for later in the season. The long sleeve T-Shirts are great for under the uniforms once the weather gets cool. PJ Pants and sweats would be nice for longer rides to competitions. You will place your order and pay the vendor at the link above. They will ship orders directly to your house this year. Anticipated delivery is approximately 3-4 weeks after the store closes. Please be aware – Due to supply chain limitations there may be a limitation on some sizes of certain items. While all items were available when we set up the store, orders are not final until the store closes on Monday August 14. If the vendor can’t get your item they will cancel your order for that item and refund your money. Let me know if you have questions Cheri Salas ([email protected]) Dear Marching Band Families,
We have a big week coming up—It’s the start of Band Camp! Monday, July 31, marchers will be fitted for their marching and concert uniforms. If you haven’t signed up for a slot on Signup Genius (https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0b45adab2ea13-marching#/), please do so now! Times are set by instrument groups to help manage the flow, but if you can’t make it during the time specified for your instrument, please sign up at a different time. We will fit for both marching and concert uniforms (concert dresses and tuxedos). Remember to bring your completed FCPS forms. The registration documents are on the band website at https://www.westfieldband.org/registration2023.html. Read through and scroll down the page to the numbered links to the registration documents. Single sided printing is preferred. We use all of these forms for band camp, marching competitions, and concert assessments throughout the year so please complete all of the forms. Marching uniforms stay at school after the fitting so everyone has their uniform for the group picture (date to be announced). We will have name tags for everyone, the uniform will be left in the travel bag at school in alphabetical order to make it easy to find on our photo day. Returning marchers should bring their vipers that day. New marchers should bring dark colored shoes to wear. Everyone will take the marching uniform home after practice the day of our photo. As soon as we confirm our day, we’ll send reminders. Camps for Leadership, Color Guard, and Percussion also take place on Monday.
Tuesday, August 1, is the first day of Band Camp. Practice is 8 am-6 pm this week and next. Please eat breakfast and arrive in time to put belongings away in the band room and get to the practice area (in the parking lot behind the football field). You’ll need:
Volunteers Still Needed! We desperately need adult volunteers to help ensure the marching season is a success. Our most pressing volunteer needs right now are for the uniform fittings on Monday and Med Bag parents during practice. We have two shifts for uniform fittings (9 am-1 pm and 3-7 pm). The Med Bag Parent sits at practice with the band with “the red med bag” and helps with first aid issues. This allows Mr. Johnson and his staff to keep the practice moving while the student gets any needed assistance. We have three shifts a day during the first two weeks of band camp, two shifts a day the last week of band camp when the marchers are at practice 2pm to 7pm. We only need a single volunteer once school starts at each of the two after school practices or one evening practice each week (not the same person every time – just one at each practice!). It’s a great opportunity to watch the kids [your kid(s)] learn drill, practice their music, or simply catch up on your reading/work! Bring a camp chair and hang out where the band is practicing to be available. The kids know how to spot the red med bag! All current volunteer positions are listed and available to sign up on the calendar. More will be added as we get closer to events through the year (football games, competitions, concerts, and more). For positions where you want to volunteer, please sign up on the website at www.westfieldband.org by clicking on the Calendar. Find the day(s) you want to volunteer and click on the multicolored hand on that day and sign up for the appropriate time/position. When you sign up, provide your name, cell number and email address; after you hit save, only your name can be publicly seen. Coordinators will then have your contact information to send reminders. Don’t forget, we’re having a Band Family Meeting on Wednesday, August 2, in the auditorium at 5:30 pm. We’ll talk about what to expect this season, the Band Boosters (yes, you’re already a member!), explain volunteer opportunities, and answer any questions. Spiritwear! In case you missed it, the Westfield Band Spiritwear Store is open for a limited time only! Place your orders now through midnight August 14. Check out the band merchandise at https://bsnteamsports.com/shop/ZAN6zZRDYB. The parent polos will be on the store this evening (7/30). REMEMBER: When you see a time on the calendar, that is the time to be ready to practice or perform, not the time to show up! Please give yourself about 15 minutes to get what you need from the band room and get to the field or stage on time. As always, please reach out if you have any questions. Lynn Petrinjak ([email protected]) WHS Marching Band Coordinator/Parent Volunteer Dear Music Supporter, Westfield High School has always provided its students with exceptional opportunities to excel in both academics and extracurricular activities since its Grand Opening in 2000. Our 16-time Virginia Honor Band program has consistently showcased the outstanding talent and commitment of our students, who have worked tirelessly to reach this milestone. The Westfield High School Band Boosters Organization supports this award- winning program by seeking donations, financial support, and volunteers from individuals, businesses, and community organizations. We are a non-profit 501 (c)(3) organization that strives to provide opportunities for all students in the Westfield High School Band Program to have an enriching musical education and opportunities beyond what the school’s curriculum and/or funds can supply. May we rely on your tax-deductible support for our Award-Winning Band Program? To ensure that our band program continues to thrive, we are seeking corporate sponsorship from respected organizations like yours. By partnering with us, you will not only support our talented young musicians but also gain valuable exposure and demonstrate your commitment to the local community. Your donation will help maximize the finances received through student participation fees and fundraising. It also helps the Booster organization provide students with performance opportunities, instrument purchases, maintenance of equipment, off-set competition expenses, camps, professional training, and scholarships. In return, we will advertise each individual, business, or organization as a generous supporter of music at our school and community activities. Sponsors are acknowledged in many ways including:
Roses Parade on January 1, 2014, and the Pearl Harbor Memorial Parade on December 7, 2022. The program currently has concert, symphonic, and percussion classes that meet each day in school. Extra-curricular ensembles include the Westfield High School Marching Band and Color Guard, Jazz Ensemble, Indoor Drumline, and Winterguard. Students in the band program are required to keep their grades up and participate in practices, performances, and competitions Thank you in advance for supporting the band program at Westfield High School.
